Q/A with 2022 four-star Ty Rodgers
Tell me about where you grew up.
I’m from Saginaw, Michigan but I go to school in Grand Blanc, Michigan.
Was basketball always a priority in your household? Who put the ball in your hands?
It wasn’t a priority necessarily, but I was always around the ball because my uncle Jason Richardson played in the league so I was always around the game... and then my older cousin Brian Bowen was always traveling and stuff and I was always with him, same with my older brother Will Rodgers.
When did you start taking the sport seriously?
I would say 3rd grade is when I knew I had the potential to be special and from there on I’ve been grinding!
Any family members/relatives that played college/pro sports?
My uncle Jason Richardson went to MSU and then played in the league for awhile. Then my cousin Brian Bowen currently is on a two-way with the Indiana Pacers. My older brother plays football at Temple.
Describe your game in a sentence or two.
What does the game of basketball mean to you? In other words, why does it mean so much to you?
It means everything to me, just growing up around the game I built a love for it, and now it’s my go to, if I’m stressed or need to take my head off something I hit the gym and put shots up. So I really value the game and everything about it.
How do you feel about your current ranking?
It’s more work to be done.
Tell me your general thoughts on rankings. Do they matter? If so, how much do they matter in the whole scheme of things?
No I don’t care about rankings at all, just because your ranked doesn’t mean your gonna make it to the league, and just because you’re not ranked doesn’t mean you won’t make it, and I think people fail to get that sometimes.
Do you have a current list of schools you’re focused on?
No, everyone that’s offered me has my eye.
What schools reach out to you the most?
Michigan, Syracuse, Houston, Marquette, Rhode Island, Vanderbilt, Louisville.
During the recruiting process, does it make a difference how often the head coach reaches out to you (texts/calls)? Does it make you feel that much of a priority?
I definitely like to hear from the head coach! Just because he’s who I’m gonna be playing for, so that definitely makes you feel more prioritized.
What advice would you give to a college coach in order to do an effective way of recruiting you in the “COVID era”? Any tips or pointers for them to stand out amongst all the other coaches in your phone?
I would say keep the phone calls short and sweet, and try to set a zoom call up with the staff once a week.
Do you have someone to guide you through the recruiting process and show you the ropes? If so, who is that person and what advice have they given you?
Yeah I’ve talked to a couple guys about it, Draymond Green, Miles Bridges, my cousin Brian Bowen and my brother Will Rodgers.. and they all tell me just to enjoy the process and go where I wanna go, and just to pray about it because god won’t lead me wrong!
What is something you’ve already learned about the recruiting process that you would share with a younger brother/teammate?
I would say to really just enjoy the process and take it slow, don’t be in a rush to commit if you don’t have to be..
Have you talked with anyone else on your class about possibly forming a package deal in college?
Dug McDaniel a couple times.
What schools have you visited so far, either unofficially, officially or virtually?
These are all unofficial but I’ve visited Houston, Louisville, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State.
Are there any schools that are currently recruiting you that have not yet offered that you expect to offer you sometime in the near future?
Texas, Dayton, Butler, South Carolina
Is building a stacked recruiting class, and bringing top talent in with you a priority?
No not at all, I’m not worried about that. Wherever I feel that’s gonna help me develop and be a great pro is where I’m gonna go.
Let’s flash forward a few years. You get your first NBA paycheck. What’s the first three things you buy?
I’m gonna put half back in the bank, and majority of the rest I’m gonna invest in real estate.
